Kate van Harreveld, artist

‘My drawings show an intimate, frozen world often with an ominous undertone.
For me everything is animated: landscapes, buildings, objects. Magical and mysterious. A feeling of impending doom is omnipresent. It’s fairly recent that I discovered why I draw the way that I do. In a world that’s totally alien to me I’m desperately yearning for that one point of reference and recognition. Simultaneously withdrawing from the real world by creating my own, one filled with silence and solitude. The act of drawing also has an incredible urgency to me. The subjects I draw evoke a certain emotion in me, in their desolation, gloom or astonishment. My latest endeavor has been ceramics, sculpting desolate landscapes, slugs and other tragic looking animals like anteaters. This has been a very exciting new road to explore. Since it is an extension of my drawings, bringing my distinctive universe from 2D into 3D.’
